The map reveals the amount of refugees per 1,000 inhabitants in mid-2015, and it is classified into five groups by natural breaks. The largest current refugee flow is resulted by Syrian Civil War, which began in March 15, 2011. According to UNCHR, 4.8 million of Syrian refugees have fled to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, while 6.6 million are internally displaced. However, only 100 million have requested asylum to European countries.

Syrian's surrounding countries have become the largest hosts of refugees and a pathway to reach the final destination - Europe. The hosts Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, Ethiopia and Jordan are financially assisted by the United Nations to support the living of refugees - refugee camps are built by NGOs and the UN.
